An overnight emergency led to Cowes lifeboat having to negotiate its way in the darkness through a large number of boats making their way down the River Medina from close to the Isle of Wight Festival site.
Solent Coastguards had been told late on Friday night that a dinghy carrying a man was overdue reaching Island Harbour from Newport, and needed assistance. The lifeboat was launched just before midnight and proceeded cautiously because of the large number of boats coming down-river, some without navigation lights.
The lifeboat, however, only got a few hundred metres beyond the floating bridge before being told that the man had finally reached Island Harbour without help. It returned to the lifeboat station at 15 minutes past midnight.
Also responding to the emergency were coastguards from Newport and Ventnor.
