A leaking yacht taking on up to 15 litres of water a minute on a pitch-black Solent late last (Thurs) night led to an urgent distress call via the Coastguards to Cowes RNLI lifeboat.
The 25-foot yacht, with two rather concerned men aboard, was filling with water in Osborne Bay. Launched at 10.22 pm, the lifeboat crew found the yacht at anchor, and quickly set to work with their portable salvage pump.
When, finally, the yacht was reasonably dry again it was discovered that the flooding was caused by an unplugged hole-fitting. After a temporary repair the yacht was towed to Shepards Marina.
The lifeboat returned to station around midnight.
